According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), pain affects more Americans than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined. You might be wondering how to treat your pain, and massage therapy is one option that is showing promise.
Research continues to support the health benefits of massage therapy for pain management. Find out how massage therapy can help these five painful conditions.
Massage therapy a type of treatment that primarily focuses on soft tissue manipulation. This type of therapy has been practiced in most cultures, both Eastern and Western, throughout human history, and was one of the earliest tools that people used to try to relieve pain. It helps many chronic conditions by relieving muscular tension, decreasing stress, decreasing anxiety and decreasing muscle soreness. Studies show that massages may also stimulate the brain to release hormones which are natural pain killers called endorphins. Massage therapy focuses on decreasing overall muscle tension. This is usually accomplished by increasing the parasympathetic (PNS) nervous functioning and by decreasing the sympathetic (SNS) nervous system. This relaxation response is also proven to increase the available serotonin levels.
Medical Massage
Medical Massage Therapy, often defined as an outcome-based treatment approach, encompasses an array of scientifically based protocols and modalities to reach the patient's desired outcome. Medical Massages are often directed by the physician for injuries related to automobile accidents, work accidents, and are determined medically necessary as part of the client’s treatment plan.
Desired outcomes are usually associated with the resolution of trauma of the musculoskeletal, stemming from injuries and disorders. Certain techniques can also treat a variety of other ailments; including: edema, and lymphedema, allergy symptom and post-surgery recovery. Medical Massage therapy is an excellent addition to other treatment approaches, such as physical therapy or chiropractic work. Additionally, this kind of treatment is highly effective alternative to more invasive treatments, such as surgery or injections for inflammation and pain management.
Wellness Massage
Wellness massages are generally directed by the client, for relaxation, minor aches, and maintenance. Despite the unrefuted benefits of wellness massages, it is important to note that Insurance does not cover the cost, as it is not deemed a medical necessity
Wellness massages are not doctor directed and do not require a medical prescription. Some example of these modalities of services includes; Swedish, sports, pregnancy, relaxation and more. The distinct difference with a wellness massage that differs from a medical in that is that a wellness massage does not ever require a specific diagnosis, rather it is an elective therapy at the discretion of the patient.
While a spa or a wellness massage might feel similar to clinical in some ways, because the purposes of these two massage types differ, the types of techniques used will also differ. During a spa visit, you typically enjoy a regular, Swedish Massage that’s more basic and centers on your relaxation. However, during a medical massage, a broader set of modalities, such as Trigger Point Therapy or Myofascial Release, to offer to aid in muscle health recovery.
